Former Attorney General and Minister for Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, former Executive General of Corporate Affairs of Fiji Airways Shaenaz Voss, and Fiji Airways General Manager Safety, Security and Quality, Sharun Ali who are facing charges relating to the unlawful carriage of firearms, have been granted bail by Nadi Magistrate Semi Babitu.
They have been released on a cash bail of $10,000 each, non-cash bond of $10,000 for two each sureties, they cannot interfere with witnesses, their passports have to be surrendered and stop departure orders have been issued as part of the bail conditions.
The three will reappear in court on 14th November, 2024 for mention.
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is charged with a total of 44 counts - 11 counts of unlawful carriage of firearms on an aircraft, 11 counts of receiving a corrupt benefit, 11 counts of breach of trust by person employed in the public service and 11 counts of abuse of office.
It is alleged that Sayed-Khaiyum between specific dates from February 4th 2018 to July 16th 2022 whilst being employed as a Minister of the Government of Fiji had with him, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, guns and bullets which he caused to be carried on board Fiji Link aircraft, by his bodyguards who were members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
Shaenaz Voss is charged with three counts of giving a corrupt benefit and Sharun Ali is charged with 11 counts of giving a corrupt benefit.
Voss, Sharun Ali and Fiji Link are charged with five counts of breach of mandatory reporting of security occurrences and three counts of breach of airline security.
They are charged under the Civil Aviation (Security) Act 1994, Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations 1994 and Crimes Act 2009.
The charges have been sanctioned by Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Nancy Tikoisuva.
