SODELPA and NFP did not want a pre-election coalition with FLP

SODELPA and NFP did not want a pre-election coalition with FLP

Secretary General of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry

The Secretary General of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry has revealed that the Social Democratic Liberal Party and the National Federation Party did not want to have a pre-election coalition with the FLP.

While speaking on Straight Talk with our News Director, Vijay Narayan last night on Viti FM and Radio Sargam, Chaudhry said that he feels a coalition with SODELPA will unite the races.

When asked on whether Chaudhry sees the FLP as an Indo Fijian party, he said that he knows that majority of the party’s support is from the Indo Fijians.

Chaudhry also made it clear that a SODELPA and FLP post-election coalition will depend on the policies of the two parties.

The government of India gave me the money to resettle in Australia but I do not know of any fundraising activities on my behalf in some countries in 2000.

Chaudhry made these comments on Straight Talk last night when questioned on whether he used any of the funds given to him to assist the farmers staying at Lautoka Girmit Centre and the Valelawa camp after the 2000 coup.

Chaudhry said he should have been allowed to contest the general election although he has been found guilty of breaching the Exchange Control Act.

He also said that the Parliamentary Leader of the Fiji Labour Party will be chosen after the general elections.

Chaudhry said at this stage he is holding the General Secretary’s position as the party only has a Parliamentary Leader’s post after an election.

However he said the government should not have brought in more eligibility requirements for candidates.

Chaudhry said these new requirements have pushed him out of the elections.
