For the first time in history, all 32 classrooms of Suva Grammar School have been renovated.
The work which is almost complete has been funded by the SGS Ex-scholars Association and the Parents Teachers Association where at least $40,000 was collected.
Ex-student trustee Selina Kuruleca said in April this year, the Board of Governors commissioned a Ministry of Labour OHS survey team which identified areas of immediate concern.
Kuruleca said the report was taken to the Ministry of Education requesting the ministry that the school was in dire need for renovations.
She said this also prompted them not to wait for help.
According to Kuruleca, they started renovation works inside the classrooms as this is where the students are using them daily for learning.
She added with the school being 53 years old and with the recent school fires, they have decided to join hands in helping keep the students safe.
SGS PTA President Maika Rainima said $16,919 was collected through their fundraising for the works, Handy Finance gave $5,000, the old scholars collected $2,316 while the rest was taken from the PTA fund.
Rainima said works are expected to be completed soon.
