Following serious concerns raised about many blocked drains, Suva City Council Special Administrator Tevita Boseiwaqa says they are working with the Fiji Roads Authority to resolve the issue.
He says the Council is looking at the drainage 30 metres from the surface and FRA is responsible for below that.
He says the FRA went underground two weeks ago and looked at the drains while the Water Authority of Fiji is also involved as they are dealing with sewerage.
While responding to questions by fijivillage News on when people can expect improved drainage in the city to ensure drains are not flooded, Boseiwaqa says people can tell SCC about blocked drains and the council will come and clear it up.
He says however, there are drains that get flooded all the time and this is caused by structural issues.
Boseiwaqa says the drainage structure is also an issue as well where some areas need to be repaired and maintained as they were built a long time ago.
The Special Administrator says there are other reasons contributing to blocked drains such as climate change where the city is on the coast and is being affected by rising sea level and heavy rain.
He says throwing rubbish and solid waste irresponsibly can also lead to blockages.
Boseiwaqa says in some cases illegal building of houses and not following engineering guidelines is also an issue as this disturbs the drainage and even the sewerage system.
The Special Administrator says illegal drainage or rain water into sewerage is also contributing to the issue.
