Free swimming classes are being offered to Suva residents for the month of October by the Suva City Council in conjunction with the Fiji Swimming Association.
SCC Chairman Isikeli Tikoduadua says they are deeply saddened to see the rise in drowning cases over the past few weeks.
He says they are taking a proactive stance to enlist the most certified swimming instructors to offer free swimming classes to all Suva residents.
Tikoduadua says registration for the classes have started and will be open until they reach the maximum number of students per class.
He says the swimming programme is open to members of all ages and they have categorised the classes into various groups and scheduled in times that would be the most convenient for each age group.
There are 2 batches of classes.
One batch will attend classes every Monday and Thursday while the other batch would attend classes every Tuesday and Friday for the month of October.
The swimming classes are 45 minutes long and everyone who signs up will be required to attend a total of 8 classes in order to gain confidence in the water.
Tikoduadua says this programme commemorates the Fiji50 celebrations and give the Suva City Council a chance to give back to the Suva community as part of the council’s social responsibility.
