It was an historic moment for the village of Rukua in Beqa when it became the first village in Fiji to take ownership of a solar smart grid.
Department of Energy principal officer Paula Katirewa said while other villages in Fiji have houses connected to individual solar panels, Rukua is the first to have houses connected to a single solar grid.
The project is a joint initiative between Fiji and the Inter Action Corporation of Japan with a cost of $800,000.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama officially opened the new Solar Grid and said that the project is to promote energy independence in Fiji.
Commodore Bainimarama was happy that Fiji has found alternative sources of energy.
