The Consumer Council of Fiji has found rotten, mouldy and sliced potatoes and onions in 77 percent of supermarkets surveyed in the greater Suva area this morning.
The surveillance was driven by the Council’s current beefed up market surveillance as well as complaints raised by concerned consumers.
Chief Executive Officer Seema Shandil says supermarkets were issued with warning letters and the Council will be submitting a report of this surveillance to the Food Safety Unit of the Ministry of Health.
Shandil says they will also submit a report to the relevant municipal councils for stringent action to be taken against these supermarkets.
She says this practice by supermarkets is unacceptable especially when there is a high demand for potatoes and onions during the Diwali season.
