Trade unions are hugely absent in sectors where exploitation is taking place on the ground such as the construction and retail sectors.

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stressed this while  debating on the Consolidated Review Report on the Ministry for Labour and Employment 2010 to 2013 Annual Reports.

Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted this after SODELPA MP Ro Filipe Tuisawau raised in parliament that some workers were not being paid FNPF.

Tuisawau says in some cases, some employers have never paid the employees their FNPF contributions.

Meanwhile the Minister for Economy explained that sometimes these issues occur.

Sayed-Khaiyum says this is where trade unions should come in and see what they can do to stop it.
