Villagers living in Rewa and Tailevu now have an alternative source of livelihood following the opening of the Rewa and Tailevu Nursery Distribution Centres by the Minister for Forestry Osea Naiqamu.
Naiqamu says the nurseries will be utilised to store trees such as fuelwood, sandalwood, fruit trees and native or indigenous trees.
He says these trees will then be used for planting in the two provinces as well as sold to generate income for villagers.
He adds the nurseries will cater for all seedlings that are bought from the six International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) community nurseries.
The nurseries are co-funded by the Fijian Government through the Ministry of Forestry and the ITTO with the aim to control coastal erosion and degradation.
