The company operating and managing the Naboro Landfill says there are resources at the landfill such as gold, gas tanks and organic matter that could used to earn money.
While speaking at the Global Recycling Day celebrations organised by Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, HG Leach General Manager Paul Evers says the landfill is currently holding 1.1 million tonnes of waste that will sit there for the rest of time.
He says it receives waste from about 350,000 people.
Evers says Fijians create about 0.7kg of waste a day and of that waste, 50% is organic that comes from the kitchen and the market.
He says they are working with private sector companies to solve that problem and if the organic matter can be used for composting the life of the landfill will double.
Evers says they have received all matter of waste at the landfill that includes whales, 30 buses and 2,000 acetylene tanks.
He also highlighted the landfill has about 20 to 100kg of pure gold and the landfill can be mined.
Evers adds if anyone wants to mine the landfill, the Ministry of Environment is ready to listen to that proposal.
The General Manager says acetylene tanks can be repurposed to make church bells that can be sold for about US$200 each and this is more than US$300,000 revenue if the bottles are shipped.
He says they have huge amounts of material and would like companies such as Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited to thrive and prosper and material at the landfill could be turned into something that can be extracted and used with the right technology and support from the local industries.
