A young fan burning a Samoan flag has sparked a rampage by a stick‑wielding mob of 200 in south Auckland.

A machete was reportedly confiscated and six people arrested after the Rugby League World Cup fan disorder, triggered when a crowd gathered in a carpark at MIT polytech in the suburb of Otara.

Tensions had increased in recent days between Tongan and Samoan fans as their nations got set to meet in Hamilton tomorrow for a crucial world cup league match.

Six people were arrested last night following a brawl involving 200 Tongans and Samoans in the carpark.

Road closures in the area were made to ensure people's safety.
