To strengthen Fiji's maritime capabilities, Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Defence, Professor Biman Prasad has commissioned the guardian-class patrol boat RFNS Timo at the RFNS Stanley Brown Naval Base this afternoon.
This commissioning marks a pivotal step in Fiji’s commitment to enhance its maritime capabilities and regional cooperation, especially after the decommissioning of RFNS Puamau after it struck Fulaga Reef in Lau in June, last year.
Professor Prasad says the gifting of the RFNS Timo is testament to the enhanced relationship between Fiji and Australia, as the state-of-the-art vessel will complement and strengthen the capability of the Fiji Navy Fleet in safeguarding Fiji's waters, protecting the natural resources and upholding regional security.
He says Fiji's maritime security is foundational in ensuring that international trade can continue without disruption and Fiji’s maritime borders amplify another layer of complexity, which requires innovative and coordinated approaches to tighten security.
The Deputy Prime Minister says the 2050 Strategy of the Blue Pacific Continent highlights the paramount importance of maritime security in achieving both national imperatives and fostering regional collaboration and partnership.
Professor Prasad says the recent influx of drug detection across the country further highlights the critical role of maritime security, as these incidents indicate a delivery method that would have only been possible by sea.
The Deputy Prime Minister says RFNS Timo will contribute to the protection of vital trade routes, ensure the sustainability of Fiji’s marine resources, and defend the nation's interests far beyond Fiji’s shores.
RFNS Timo is another gift from the Australian government.
