Attorney General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says that the reason roads are now done by the Fiji Roads Authority instead of the Municipal Councils' is because the quality of roads in municipalities were terrible.
While speaking at the reception for Special Administrators at Holiday Inn in Suva today, Sayed-Khaiyum says they have been fixing the roads for the Municipal Councils which includes footpaths and lighting and the Councils' owe them about $15 million.
He adds that they intend to get that money back through the Ministry of Local Government because the money came from the rate-payers of the country.
Sayed-Khaiyum also says that the Municipal Councils' need to work on the quality of other facilities they provide such as public conveniences.
He says the standard of some of the public conveniences in the country is terrible which has basic issues such as lights.
Sayed-Khaiyum suggests that this can be fixed by the use of sunlight roofs which will make the place more inviting.
