Qalau Road still closed due to flooding

The Qalau Road in Rakiraki is still under three feet of water and is still closed to all traffic.

The Advisory Councillor of Qalau/Waimari Mahesh Prasad said that the closure adds more pressure on nearly 1,900 residents going to work or school because they have to walk about eight kilometers using the mountainous road.

Prasad said water from the Qalau/Waimari River now comes on the road and despite raising the issue many times in the Advisory Councillors meeting for a pile to be built to divert water, nothing has been done.

He added there is a need to dredge the river however requests in the past have fallen on deaf years and is calling on officials to look into the matter so that Qalau Road is not flooded in the future.
