A 28-year-old teacher from Queen Victoria School has now been charged with assaulting students at the boarding school.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirms that the teacher has been charged in relation to the second complaint filed by a Year 13 student’s parent at Lami Police Station.
The teacher is expected to appear in the Korovou Magistrates Court with 5 students from QVS who have also been charged with assault.
Serious concerns have been raised on the alleged assaults and bullying of students by some senior prefects and a teacher at QVS for some time.
Minister for Education, Doctor Mahendra Reddy has stated that they are conducting an investigation and such incidents will not be tolerated.
Police received two complaints regarding the alleged assaults at QVS - one at Korovou Police Station and the second from Lami Police Station.
Meanwhile the Human Rights and Anti‑Discrimination Commission is also looking into a complaint in relation to alleged student beatings at QVS.
The Commission met with one of the students yesterday and will now as part of its investigations conduct interviews with school administrators, Ministry of Education officials, students and the parents.
Commission Director Ashwin Raj says that they take these allegations very seriously as it concerns the rights of the child guaranteed under the Constitution, constitutes a breach of the Child Protection Policy and that corporal punishment in schools has been abolished.
