Public service drivers to follow new code of conduct

The Land Transport Authority will be enforcing Public Service Vehicle drivers code of conduct from February 12th.

The aim of this code is to align PSV drivers to ensure best practices are delivered with road safety and customer services as the paramount interest.

All PSV drivers must behave in civil and orderly manner, must obey the law of the land at all times, treat commuters, other road users and public with respect and dignity.
 
All PSV drivers must be neatly dressed and tidy. No round neck t-shirts with sleeves cut off=s, hats, beanies, chokers, ear rings or facial piecing. Proper collar or round neck t-shirts and shirts must be worn with long pants.

All PSV drivers must properly and neatly maintain their beard and moustache. Drivers must take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of passengers while boarding or exiting the vehicle.

The driver must charge the correct fare and issue tickets as specified under the relevant permits.

Drivers are prohibited to count money while driving, amend record or talk to passengers while driving unless it is for safety or matters relating to the journey.

Smoking while driving is prohibited in all public transport and using mobile phone while driving is a serious offence.

Drivers who breach this code can be told be pay minimum fine of $50 or maximum $500 or 3 months imprisonment under the Land Transport fees and penalties amendment regulation 2000 and regulation 58 of the LTA PSV regulations 2000.

Meanwhile, Fiji Taxi Union general secretary, Rishi Ram has welcomed Land Transport Authorities decision saying this is in line with improving the standards of Public Service vehicle operations in Fiji and improving on driver standards to better enhance passenger transportation.
