Protesters have taken inspiration from a popular Netflix thriller series as they take a stand against the annual Melbourne Cup.
Members from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) have put on a 'Squid Game' themed display outside the gates of Flemington Racecourse yesterday.
PETA's Mimi Bekhechi says the demonstration was trying to draw a link between the plot of the Squid Game series and the way horses were treated in the horse-racing industry.
Eight horses have died following the Melbourne Cup event in the past nine years.
Meanwhile, the winner of the Melbourne Cup this year will get Australian $4.4 million in prize money.
A total of $8 million prize money is up for grabs this year.
Some of the favorites are Incentivise, Spanish Mission, Verry Elleegant and defending champion Twilight Payment.
The Melbourne Cup race will start at around 4pm today.
