From this year the prices of life jackets are expected to be sold from $20, which normaly costs between $60-$70, and also over a thousand safety device kits will be given to boat owners.
This is according to Neal Slacke Chief Executive Officer Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji while highlighting the steps being undertaken this year on improving maritime safety, as recent incidents out at sea also point to a lack of safety devices on vessels.
Slacke said the Government also considered life jackets being sold duty free in the National budget after boat owners in remote areas highlighted their challenges.
Meanwhile, two Decrees the Maritime Transport and Ship Registration will be phased into local legislation in 2013, with the Marine Act of 1986 being repealed.
The intention of these two Decrees is to dramatically improve maritime safety and security and protection of the marine environment.
