Outgoing President Jioji Konrote says about six years ago when he was entrusted with the most prestigious, equally important, demanding and reverent appointment, he graciously and humbly accepted the challenge because he believed that God has destined and groomed him well.
Konrote says he leaves with a great sense of humble gratitude and satisfaction that he and his wife, Sarote, tried their very best the serve the people of Fiji well with compassion, genuine honesty and dignity.
He says it's a great pleasure, honour and a privilege to have served the nation and the people of Fiji.
He adds they depart the State House with humility and a sense of satisfaction that they had tried their best to serve all Fijians in upholding and preserving the integrity and dignity of this institution.
Konrote thanked the Prime Minister and the Government for the trust and confidence they had in him and also to all Fijians for the tremendous and overwhelming support.
He also paid tribute and congratulated The Turaga Na Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere as he handed over the helm of leadership to an exceptional individual - a man of the people and a high Chief with Fiji at heart.
While presenting the Government's tribute and gift, Acting Prime Minister Inia Seruiratu says Konrote diligently carried out the vision of the Government to take Fiji forward. He says as the first non iTaukei President of Fiji, Konrote symbolises the new Fiji.
Seruiratu says Konrote has led Fiji in its times of struggle, following the times of cyclones.
He adds Fiji is blessed to have a man of his character, a man of maturity.
Before a moving traditional farewell ceremony at the State House this afternoon, the outgoing President was accorded the 100 guard of honour by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
The traditional ceremony was conducted by the vanua of Kalokolevu.
The ceremony was attended by the Acting Prime Minister Inia Seruiratu, the Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, the Commander of RFMF Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho, members of parliament and foreign dignitaries.
Meanwhile the inauguration ceremony of President-elect, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere will be held tomorrow.
