It was a memorable day for the villagers of Muana, Vunisei and Navatuyaba in Rewa as their prayers have been answered after the Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau commissioned the ground breaking ceremony for the new Toga Bridge.
The Matanitikina of Toga, Peni Torowale says today is a memorable day for the villagers in the district of Toga and the Rewa Province as a whole
He says it has been a long time they have been knocking on the government's door to assist them in constructing a new bridge.
Torowale adds the new bridge is a blessing for them and it will also bring about new development to the three villages.
Rewa Provincial Council Chairman Macanawai Mataitini says the issue of the Toga Bridge has been part of their discussion in past years council meetings and they are thankful that the government has heard their plea.
He says the Irish Crossing was constructed in the early 1980's and when it rains, the crossing gets flooded and restricts them from accessing services or even to buy food to sustain them during the flooding period.
Mataitini says the new bridge will surely end the days of risking a person's life to cross a flooded river.
While officiating at the ground breaking ceremony, Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau says the new Toga Bridge is a $5 million investment.
He says the new bridge will benefit the people of Toga and will ensure continuity of movement during adverse weather when there is flooding.
Ro Filipe assured the people that it is their priority that there is reliable road network for all Fijians, particularly rural dwellers and those in Maritime communities.
The new Toga Bridge is expected to be completed in 6-months and the contractor is China Railway 1.
