Becoming a vegetable farmer has transformed the life of 55-year-old Uma Prasad, who finds peace and stays connected with nature.
Prasad, who is from Vunivau in Labasa, says he has made use of his backyard for the past four years, planting vegetables such as long beans, eggplant, lettuce, cabbage and coriander.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Prasad says he turned to vegetable farming after facing some medical issues.
He says he never regretted his decision as he earns about $150 to $200/month.
He says they have also received assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture in dealing with the issue of pests.
The 55-year-old says if they get more land for farming, it will enhance the capacity of his produce and earn more.
He says he could not have done this without the encouragement and support of his wife, Shardha Wati, over the years.
