National Federation Party Leader, Professor Biman Prasad says an inquiry is needed to find out who has been misleading the people of Fiji in regards to liquidity while Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says there are no issues with liquidity levels.
While speaking on his motion that a Special Parliamentary Committee to look into the banking, superannuation and financial services industry in Fiji and its impacts on consumers, Prasad says there has been a concern about the levels of liquidity.
Prasad says the practice of the banks in lending, in deposits and raising interest rates clearly indicated there was a liquidity problem.
He claims last year liquidity levels started to dry up.
He says the liquidity story is not what they have heard from the government.
Meanwhile, Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says that there is no liquidity problem and they have statistics to prove this.
Sayed‑Khaiyum says for the Opposition members to say that because of liquidity they should have some commission of inquiry is ludicrous.
He stressed that there is no liquidity problem and new bank loans by private companies has been over $2 million annually from the less than 0.5 million dollars a decade ago.
