The National Disaster Management Office has plans in place to conduct a surprise School Tsunami Drill with the 5 schools that were part of the School Tsunami Drill on Thursday.
This was highlighted by the National Disaster Management Office Director Anare Leweniqila following a debrief after the School Tsunami Drills conducted with 5 schools in the Nasese Area on Thursday.
When questioned by Fijivillage on whether students already knowing that a School Tsunami Drill will take place played a huge role in the response and quick evacuation out of the danger zone in 5-7 minutes.
Leweniqila responded that students at the 5 schools were aware of the tsunami drills on Thursday and this did play a major part in the improved time taken to evacuate the 5,000 students and 150 teachers despite schools conducting their own tsunami drills in the past 2 or 3 years.
He has also revealed that there they hope to also conduct a surprise School Tsunami Drill with the schools.
The schools who were part of the School Tsunami Drill included Suva Grammar School, Veiuto Primary School, Stella Marist Primary School, Sacred Heart College and Draiba Primary School.
