People should know the location of their nearest evacuation centre if there is a severe weather system approaching the country.
When questioned by Fijivillage on the people still living in tents after Tropical Cyclone Winston, Assistant Minister for National Disaster Management Joeli Cawaki said that people need to always be prepared and take precautions.
Cawaki stressed at the launch of the National Disaster Awareness Week today that this week is very important to provide the platform for the people to be aware and prepare for the cyclone season.
He says we are not only preparing for cyclones but also be aware and prepare for other hazards like flooding, storm surges, earthquakes and tsunamis that are no strangers to Fiji.
Nadi Weather Office Director Ravind Kumar says this year’s cyclone season is expected to have five to seven tropical cyclones within our region, with three to five predicted to reach category 3 and one to two predicted to reach category 4 or 5 status.
