Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says as tourists come in, Fijians need to ensure that we continue to abide by the various COVID-19 health protocols that the Permanent Secretary of Health is going to issue.

Sayed-Khaiyum says we do not want a situation where we open up the borders, there is a huge influx of tourists, everybody is happy and then we reach a scenario where they have cases out in the outer islands.

He says there are certain places in Fiji that still have low rates of vaccination and those people are still vulnerable.

The Minister says we do not want a situation where 2 months later, the Permanent Secretary of Health, Doctor James Fong has to make the call to shut our borders.

Meanwhile, Dr. Fong says they will escalate the enforcement of COVID safe measures from December 1st.

He says this means there will be more fines and public health punitive measures dished out.
