The Fiji Sugar Corporation says it is the best option for Penang Sugar Mill in Rakiraki to permanently close down as it was the least efficient and a significant amount of money was needed to repair the mill.
The mill suffered significant damage during Cyclone Winston last year.
FSC Chief Executive Officer Graham Clark says a lot of thought went into this before the final decision was made by the FSC board.
Clark says a number of Penang workers have been redeployed to the Rarawai and Lautoka mills.
He also says that the growers will be compensated for transporting the cane from Rakiraki to Rarawai Mill in Ba. Clark states that compensation will come in the form where the growers will not have to pay more for their cane to be delivered.
