The Parliament of Fiji hosted Fiji’s first ever “Women’s Parliament Fiji” which was aimed at helping women become aspiring leaders of society.
Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni says the event offers a unique opportunity to Fiji’s aspiring women leaders to learn about parliament, get briefed on important development issues and to build their policy skills.
Luveni says that the event also confirms the commitment of the Fijian Parliament to promote the participation of women in politics.
Meanwhile, UN President Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Osnat Lubrani says the UNDP is proud to be supporting the Parliament of Fiji to facilitate the “Women’s Parliament Fiji”.
Lubrani says this is also part of their ongoing work on promoting women’s leadership and political participation at the highest decision making levels in the region and globally.
50 women from various backgrounds in the country were selected by a Steering Committee made up of representatives from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, National Council of Women and the Office of Secretary General of the Fijian Parliament.
