Minister for Education , Rosy Akbar has called on parents to support their children as they learn to read and write and to engage actively in their education to complement the work done by teachers in schools.
In her message for International Literacy Day, Akbar says literacy is the key to education and is supported by their teachers throughout the education continuum.
She says with parents, teachers, community members working together, they can produce a strong foundation for literacy in Fiji and set our students on the road to achieving their dreams.
Akbar says through their Library Services, support is provided to community libraries and to the schools so that students and community members have access to books and increasingly, online learning adding over time, they hope to provide Literacy for Everyone, Everywhere.
She adds literacy is a part of Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” (SDG Target 4.6).
