The Papua New Guinea capital Port Moresby is reportedly in lockdown after security forces stormed parliament demanding payment of allowances after the hosting of the APEC summit over the weekend.
Local media are reporting that many schools, businesses and government offices chose to close early because of the unrest.
Some rioting and looting has also broken out in parts of the city and gunshots can clearly be heard in videos posted on social media.
People are also being warned to be careful while travelling on roads as vehicles are reportedly having stones thrown at them.
Members of the police and correctional service were among the security forces venting their frustrations at parliament, damaging property and allegedly assaulting some staff.
The PNG government has reportedly assured them that they will be paid.
