Pacific Recycling Foundation will be organising the Tourism Recycling Forum next Wednesday at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, to recognize the important role that the tourism sector plays in the economy and the influence it has.
PRF Founder Amitesh Deo says this is an opportunity for them as stakeholders and they coming together to reflect on how recycling practices have been and how it can be improved.
He says the element of making sure that recycling is not seen just as a tick-in-the-box element, it is not seen as a feel-good element, but it actually has an element of transparency, accountability and ownership intact in it.
He says they will make sure that resorts, hotels and the tourism sector recognizes the key role they play in waste management.
The Founder further says the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka will be officiating and its important for them to have the stakeholder engagement as well.
He says they have done an evaluation of all resorts who are part of the program based on the conditions of recyclables, how communications has been, their commitment and how the whole recycling program plans out at individual resorts.
He adds one of the key elements of this is unpacking the difficulties and the challenges they are facing as recycling advocates because some of the key challenges that affects the organization is due to the failures of different stakeholders which affects the whole recycling program in Fiji.
He says they have the opportunity that purely focused on resorts and hotels, the tourism sector and recovering of key recyclable items that has been really neglected in particular resorts and hotels.
He says the resorts who will become part of this sustainability program will get a specific accreditation that they can highlight and showcase to their guests.
