A call has been made to the general public by the Pacific Recycling Foundation for a shift in the mindset of the people towards environmental responsibility. This follows a cleanup campaign conducted by the PRF in partnership with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Malhana Cloud Kitchen, Koronivia Business Council and local residents along Koronivia Road in Nausori recently.
PRF Founder Amitesh Deo emphasised the alarming increase in waste disposal in the area compared to previous campaigns, pointing to a troubling lack of accountability among both travellers and residents.
The cleanup campaign saw the successful collection of 596 kilograms of waste which included 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminium cans.
Deo says this is not just about cleaning up waste but it is about changing mindsets.
He says every individual needs to reflect on their habits and make conscious choices that support our environment.
He adds that despite their efforts, some waste had to be left behind due to the inaccessibility of soggy drains, which posed potential dangers to the cleanup team.
PRF expressed its gratitude to the Fiji Police Force for ensuring the safety and smooth flow of traffic during the campaign.
The founder says the cleanup, which stretched from the Koronivia Roundabout to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive, uncovered a significant amount of household waste irresponsibly dumped along the roadside and into drains, posing environmental and health risks to the community.
Deo says among the waste were items such as baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles, takeaway containers, and clothing.
He adds the huge amount of waste collected in just two hours underscores the urgent need for collective responsibility in waste management, with the goal of keeping Koronivia clean and green for future generations.
