Public Rental Board Acting General Manager, Patrick Veu has revealed they plan to build 275 units in Nabua, Valelevu, Narere, Davuilevu and Lautoka.
While the project planning continues, Veu has also raised issues regarding some PRB tenants who are now earning more than the required income threshold while other tenants are struggling to pay their rent.
He says tenants earning more can graduate to own their own strata units and they also have an arrangement with Housing Authority where PRB tenants are given priority consideration for Housing Authority strata titles and lots.
Veu went on to say that they are constantly having talks with those tenants who are unable to pay their rent for them to pay their rental arrears.
Veu adds the Ministry of Lands has agreed to give them four pieces of land while Housing Authority will give them two pieces for PRB development.
He says in Nabua, PRB plans to upgrade and renovate 18 existing units and also construct 50 units.
Veu says in Valelevu, PRB has been given land in Caqiri and an open space nearby as well where they plan to construct 50 units.
He says they plan to upgrade and construct 50 units in Narere.
He adds PRB plans to construct between 150 to 200 units in Davuilevu while in Tavakubu, Lautoka they plan to construct 25 units.
He says all projects are currently in land acquisition and planning stages.
He further adds land acquisition in Davuilevu will cost $1.2 million while construction is estimated to cost $18 million.
Land acquisition in Tavakubu is expected to cost $2.2 million.
The PRB Acting General Manager says the upgrade of Marine Barracks in Nabua will be $4.5 million, upgrade of Narere Barracks will cost $600,000 while land acquisition in Caqiri, Valelevu will cost $4.5 million.
All land will have 99 years leases.
He made these comments while presenting their 2016/2017 Annual Report to the standing committee on public accounts.
He adds there are currently 900 applicants on their waiting list.
