Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says where world leaders have failed to act on climate change, mayors are stepping up.
He made this comment while officiating as the guest of honour at the 7th session of the Asia-Pacific Urban Forum in Penang, Malaysia.
He says across the world, urban centres are assuming a larger role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, something that is particularly true with climate change.
Bainimarama says while Pacific Island States are experiencing some of the most rapid rates of urbanisation, the drivers of this change are common throughout the world.
He says families are moving to cities looking for work or to further their education, they’re escaping climate impacts, or they’re simply seeking the convenience of city living.
He says it is up to the leaders to ensure that when people make that move, find towns and cities that are capable of supporting their well-being.
He says people in the Pacific have accepted that this new reality, and recognise that planning of urban settlements and associated infrastructure, legislation and capacity must keep up with the pace of urbanisation.
