Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has reiterated that Fiji will be a strong advocate for Small Island Developing State issues and strongly support the UN Human Rights Council initiatives on climate change, environment and internally displaced persons.
Bainimarama highlighted this while meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Norway Eriksen Soreide along the margins of the UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva.
He also used the opportunity to share developments in Fiji and Fiji’s main focus given its election as a member and now Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council, which is a first for the Pacific Small Islands Developing States.
At the meeting, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Norway congratulated Fiji on its inclusion into the UN Human Rights Council, the first country in the Pacific Islands to be elected into the Council as a member.
Bainimarama also met with Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne as well as newly appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet and congratulated her on her appointment.
The Prime Minister is in Geneva attending the 40th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, which concludes on the 22nd of next month.
