The people of Dravuni Village in Tailevu will now benefit from the $500,000 worth new seawall that was commissioned by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday.
While commissioning the seawall, Bainimarama says whenever he visits a coastal community in Fiji, he hears a common request from the people, which is asking for a seawall.
He says while this breaks his heart, it also gives him renewed inspiration for government to do everything possible to help Fijian families.
Bainimarama says the seawalls are just one way that they can allow villagers and those who come after them to not only survive, but to thrive.
Bainimarama adds the seawall in Dravuni was built to a standard aimed at maximum protection from coastal erosion.
He says due to COVID-19, much of the major meetings to address this issue have been delayed but that cannot be an excuse for delayed climate action, not when lives and livelihoods in Dravuni and all around the world hang in the balance.
