People living in Viwa Island will be celebrating Christmas in a different way tomorrow as they now have electricity.
Viwa Island’s rural electrification system was commissioned yesterday by the Prime Minister.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Bainimarama says their connection to the national grid is righting the wrongs of the past; it is of government catching up with developments that past governments failed to do.
Bainimarama says they will get electricity twenty-four-seven and their children will be able to study under lights that won’t deteriorate their eye sight.
He says they will now have access to amenities such as refrigerators and television sets.
He also reminded the villagers to pay their electricity bills as they all have to play their part.
Bainimarama says their bills will be subsidized since government will pay half of the tariff rate if their household annual income is $30,000 or less and if they use 95 kilowatt-hours or less of electricity a month.
He says this will be applicable from the 1st of next year and they will need to fill out an application form with FEA.
