The government has set aside more than $746,000 to begin the construction of the new Vatuwaqa Funeral Rites facility.
It is expected to open in six months.
While officiating at the ground breaking ceremony, Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says people can finally conduct the last rites of loved ones with dignity and respect at the new facility.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the new facility would have a cremation space, kitchen space, parking lots, a peace garden and toilet facilities that would be available on site.
He adds the facility can conduct five rituals at the same time.
The government is expected to open similar facilities in Nausori and Lautoka soon.
