Increasingly our education people are leaving the country and over 50,000 people have left in the last 2 years.
This was highlighted by Dialogue Fiji Chairperson Nemani Buresova during the Dialogue Fiji panel discussion on Addressing Quality in Fiji's Tertiary Education.
Buresova says we need to be worried about it as these are people who have attained good education.
He says Fiji is seen to be a supplier of labour for Australia and New Zealand and we need to create an environment that attracts people to stay in Fiji and help our nation to develop.
The Chairperson further says Fiji lacks a lot of resources compared to other countries however, it is a combined effort of all the ministries to create an environment in which people learn and take up opportunities that are provided.
Buresova further says education does not only rely on what we teach people in the classrooms but it involves a holistic approach to living life and when people come out of the universities they need to be challenged as well.
While sharing his experiences Fiji Higher Education Commission Chief Executive Officer Dr Rohit Kishore stated that very experienced and qualified people are leaving so they are trying to fill that gap with young graduates.
Dr Kishore also stated that the Tourism and Hospitality industry was served by TVET certificate holders and there are many demands put on them however, graduates need time and on-the-job training.
