Over 180 women took part in a morning walk today along the seawall in Nasese to share their experiences, challenges and learn from each-other.
The annual Vital Voices Global Mentoring Walk was organised by Graduate Women Fiji to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Graduate Women Fiji President Maria Ronna Luna Pastorizo-Sekiguchi says mentoring is an important tool especially for women who have gone through challenges and they can impart that knowledge to the next generation of women leaders in their various field.
Tara Chetty who works in the area of gender equality and women’s rights says working in this field is always challenging as it is not always accepted and there is a shift in the norms and social acceptability.
She says she looks up to Virisila Buadromo, Yvonne Underhill-Sem and young feminists.
Chetty’s advice to young women is to recognise their own voices and the leadership that they can bring to the table.
Participant, Lice Nakauciri says her conversation with Chetty was beneficial as she got pointers on where to take her career.
The 28-year-old says she plans to finish her degree in Human Resources Management this semester.
She is also training to join the British Army.
Nakauciri also plays touch rugby for the Suva based – Breakers.
Her message for young women is not be afraid to pursue your dreams and take everyday as it comes.
