In 2023, the Fiji Haemophilia Foundation estimated that over 100 individuals in Fiji are affected by this condition and currently 47 Fijians live with haemophilia, 33 registered with the foundation.
This has been highlighted by Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa during World Haemophilia Day celebration at the Sigatoka Hospital.
Haemophilia is a rare, inherited bleeding disorder where the blood does not clot properly.
Ravunawa says the statistics highlight the importance of continued efforts in outreach and registration, as each person’s journey with this condition deserves attention and care.
He says the Fiji Haemophilia Foundation pivotally offers vital support by providing free blood clotting medications, specifically Recombinant Factor VIII, to patients at selected major hospitals and health centres across Fiji.
The Assistant Minister says this lifesaving treatment is critical in managing haemophilia and preventing severe complications.
He is urging those who may have a family history of haemophilia, to engage with healthcare professionals about the available testing options.
Ravunawa stresses early intervention and awareness can make a significant difference.
Symptoms of haemophilia, such as unexplained and excessive bleeding, deep bruising, unusual bleeding after vaccinations, and joint pain, should prompt immediate consultation with a healthcare provider.
He says unfortunately, Fiji is currently facing significant challenges in diagnosing haemophilia where our testing samples often require overseas confirmation, delaying diagnosis and treatment.
Ravunawa says the Fiji Haemophilia Foundation is actively seeking to establish a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health to strengthen processes and awareness campaigns, and the Ministry is committed to moving this forward.
He further says the Ministry will prioritize refresher training for Emergency Department staff as many lack the knowledge required to manage haemophilic patients effectively during bleeding events.
Ravunawa also commended Aspen Medical for assisting with the latest diagnosis initiative and the Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences for assisting in organising the event.
