The opposition's motion to establish a Special Committee to review the Maritime/Outer Island Development Programmes was defeated in Parliament last night.
The motion which was moved by SODELPA MP, Jese Saukuru had most of the government side elaborating on why there is no need for such a committee to review such developments.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Jone Usamate says the Opposition have not given any details as to why there is a need for the committee to be set up.
Usamate says the developments that are being done in the maritime and outer islands have been outstanding as more people are being provided with the services that were not there in past years.
He also claimed that the developments they are doing now are the ones that previous governments have been ignoring.
SODELPA MP, Mosese Bulitavu stressed that this committee is being proposed through the on-going public consultations where people have brought up their concerns about the government.
Bulitavu says the government is becoming unpopular to the people as he claims that most of the promises they gave have been forgotten.
Meanwhile, National Federation Party MP, Lenora Qereqeretabua says the government's development programs have not been fully effective in changing the lives of the people.
Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the need for such committees has not been proven by the opposition.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the government knows that maritime islands are going through a lot of issues and they have allocated funds in the budget for the development of maritime and outer islands.
He adds that the government is doing all it can to uplift the lives of people in the islands.
