The Online Safety Commission has revealed that they have been recently notified about some individuals who are creating channels on the social media application namely Viber and posting/ sharing intimate videos or images of other individuals, particularly women and girls.

The Commission says the channel that is created on Viber allows other users to join the channel and post/ share the intimate videos or images of other individuals which they have in their possession.

They say they are currently investigating some of the complaints that have been lodged with the Commission with regards to this channel and necessary action will be taken upon completion of the investigation.

They add they strongly condemn such acts and are urging the members of the public who are using Viber to stop creating or joining such channels and groups which share intimate images and videos of other individuals.

The Commission says if anyone has joined such groups, they are advised to leave and delete the contents that may have been obtained from such groups.

They say posting or sharing of intimate materials that contain other individuals are classified as Image Based Abuse by the Commission and they are requesting members of the public who may have been subjected to Image Based Abuse through such groups on Viber to come forward and lodge their formal complaint with the Commission.

They add this will allow them to investigate, attempt to remove the content and if deemed necessary and upon the consent of the complainant, refer the complaint for prosecution under section 25 of the Online Safety Act 2018.
