The old Tamavua-i-Wai bridge will now be demolished and reconstructed into another new two lane bridge after a signing ceremony today to confirm Japan's $60 million assistance through their General Grant Aid Program.
The CEO of Fiji Roads Authority Kamal Prasad says this will allow the Tamavua-i-Wai bridge to soon have four lanes and reduce traffic.
Prasad says the soon to be reconstructed bridge will have two lanes coming into Suva and the new bridge will have two lanes going out of Suva.
Prasad says they are currently in the process of getting contractors to do demolition work on the old bridge which is expected to be done by August this year.
Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate and the Japanese Ambassador to Fiji Kawakami Fumihiro officiated at the signing ceremony.
Fumihiro says he has confidence that this project will help expedite Fiji’s economic revitalisation and further strengthen friendship between the two governments.
Usamate says over the years the two countries have fostered a deep and productive relationship.
The Minister says he is also thankful to the Japanese government for providing the necessary engineering, social and environmental studies.
