No one wants US as guardian-FHRC

The Fiji Human Rights Commission said no one wants the US to be the guardian of human rights for the rest of the world as it’s like asking Dracula to guard the blood bank.

Fiji Human Rights Chairperson Dr. Shaista Shameem was responding to the latest US State Department Report on Human Rights Practices which states that the Fiji Human Rights Director repeatedly failed to publicly object to significant allegations of human rights abuses by the military and police, including three incidents that resulted in the deaths of uncharged detainees (Nimilote Verebasaga, Sakiusa Rabaka and Tevita Malasebe).

Dr. Shameem said the US government should tell Fiji how it intends to deal with gross human rights violations committed by the US in Iraq while it destroys that country. She also challenges the US government to let the people of Fiji know whether any weapons of mass destruction have been found.

She said FHRC will not bother to reply to the US State department report since they were not consulted before its publication.
