The Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister has clarified that no foreign labourers have been brought into the country to cut cane.
Yogesh Karan says there has been a lot of talk about laborers being brought in to work on sugar cane farms.
Karan says people need to get facts before speculating on such matters.
He says the government is considering bringing in foreigners to cut cane should there be a shortage of cane cutters in the country.
Meanwhile in a Talanoa Session in Nakelo, Tailevu last month, a Tokataka district representative had questioned Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama on why the government is bringing in foreign laborers to work as sugarcane cutters as many youth in the Tokatoka district are unemployed.
Bainimarama had told him that the youth representative did not tell the government that they wanted to be cane-cutters.
