Fiji Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer, John O’Connor says there has been no approach made to them about Fiji joining a proposed Pacific Super Rugby team that is bidding to be based in Auckland, New Zealand.
O’Connor says Fiji had bid for a team to be based in Fiji and that is the priority for them.
He added they do not know who is behind the bid for the super rugby team to be based in Auckland.
Stuff.co reported that a group backed by All Black legend Bryan Williams will table a bid to become the sixth Super Rugby franchise for 2021, selling itself as a Pacific bid for Pacific people.
They say Moana Pasifika has been working on its pitch since June, and has a heavyweight group of backers, including the former Attorney-Generals of Samoa and Tonga.
It’s understood there’s informal support for the bid from the Samoan, Tongan and Fijian unions.
