80 percent of offenders in child sexual abuse cases are members of the family of the child whom they know and trust.

This statistic was highlighted by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama while opening the new refurbished Taveuni Magistrates Court.

He stressed that child abuse cases in Fiji are a shame.

Bainimarama says in Fiji there are increased cases in offences which include criminal offences, abuses, domestic violence, land issues and many more.

He adds that it is very important for all Fijians to know and understand the laws.

He stresses citizens of Fiji should know about appropriate action or legal processes that they can follow when they encounter certain situations.

He reminded the Taveuni Court staff that members of the public should be served in an efficient, dignified and transparent manner.

The current court facility now have the waiting area, convenience cell block, more rooms for court staff and a world class court room.

The audio recording system will ensure that judgements are properly transcribed in a timely manner.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Anthony Gates says that the upgrading of the courthouse demonstrates the commitment of the Judiciary backed by the Government to ensure better facilities and faster access to justice.

Justice Gates also highlighted that getting the right balance of increase in facilities, and quality of facilities, for use by the public, paying attention to the real needs of visitors and users of the courthouse, whilst ensuing that taxpayers money is not wasted, is essential.
