New state of the art Suva Meteorology Office opens

To ensure people of Fiji and neighboring countries continue to receive timely and accurate climate related information a new state of the art Suva Meteorology Office has been opened this morning.
During the official opening, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama highlighted that this new $3.6 million double storey facility will also be a backup for the Nadi Weather office.
After the opening, Works, Transport and Public Utilities Permanent Secretary Francis Kean said $2.2 million was given by government for the construction of this important building.
The Prime Minister highlighted that for the last decade, Tropical Cyclones and floods have cost more than a hundred lives and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damages in Fiji alone.
Commodore Bainimarama said this new weather office will not only provide its service to Fiji but seven other Pacific countries.
He said Nadi is one of the six specialized centers for tropical cyclone warning and forecasting in the world.
