Good news for people living in Sigatoka as they now have sporting facilities and amenities after a new multi-purpose sports court was opened in Nayawa sub-division this afternoon.
While opening the multi-purpose court, Minister for Local Government Parveen Bala highlighted that the $120,000 worth of multi-purpose court has a basketball court, a netball court and 2 volleyball courts.
He says there is a provision of a lawn tennis court as well.
Bala says there was a concentration of such facilities in Suva in the past and districts like Sigatoka were neglected.
He says it is time to redress that imbalance.
Bala says these facilities will provide additional training and competition facilities for the athletes, that the district of Sigatoka and the larger province of Nadroga/Navosa is famous for.
He says this will enable another generation of famous netballers, basketball and volleyball players from the district to fly the district, provincial and Fijian colors.
Bala says this is part of an on-going, systemic and structured program to improve on existing facilities and build new ones, based on careful assessment of current and future requirements.
Bala also highlights that the Sigatoka Riverbank project will be commencing soon which shall see the riverbank upgraded with a government commitment of more than $800,000.
He says this involves mitigation against river bank erosion that is a result of climate change.
Bala says it will also have climate change friendly initiatives on waste removal and disposal.
He says the upgrade is being carried out to ensure that the place also has better recreational facilities.
