The last remaining active COVID-19 case has recovered and New Zealand has marked 17 days in a row without a new case.
Stuff.co reports that the recent recovery is a person in their 50s.
New Zealand Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield says this is really good news for the person concerned, and it’s also something the rest of New Zealand can take heart from.
Dr Bloomfield says having no active cases for the first time since February 28 is certainly a significant mark in their journey but ongoing vigilance against COVID-19 will continue to be essential.
Meanwhile, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced that New Zealand will lift its last remaining restrictions to curb the coronavirus at midnight when the country will return to Level 1 on its four level system of alerts.
Ardern says New Zealand had introduced a strict lockdown 75 days ago with the aim of getting to a level where life feels as normal as it can in the midst of a global pandemic.
She says that now she can announce that Cabinet has agreed they can now move to Level 1.
Ardern says international borders will remain closed given the challenge of COVID-19 around the world.
